Impervious Cover

The Impervious Cover product is a high-resolution (1 meter) dataset that provides a map of all builtup surfaces in multiple formats to support different stormwater management and ecological applications. The Impervious Cover data layer is derived from 1 meter or better resolution, 4 band color infrared imagery that is acquired typically on a 2 year cycle as part of the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) or a state orthoimagery acquisition project. This product is an extract from the Land Cover product and provides a cost-effective solution where impermeable cover is the primary class of interest for your application.

EarthDefine's Impervious Cover product offers significant advantages over coarser resolution impervious layers that are available for large areas like the 30m National Land Cover Data Percent Impervious layer. This is because in areas of fine-scale spatial heterogeneity, the higher source resolution (1 meter) imagery enables the capture of smaller ground features and more accurate mapping of impervious surfaces.

The Impervious Cover product helps federal, state, local and private entities by supplying accurate and spatially explicit high-resolution impervious cover data that helps them perform a wide range of mapping and analytical functions. Numerous studies show positive correlations between the amount of impervious cover and a decline in ecosystem function, so impervious cover serves as an important surrogate to measure a range of ecological properties.
