A lot of EarthDefine data reaches the people who use it through other fabulous providers. We license our nationwide datasets to platforms whose customers need building, canopy, and land cover detail in the tool they already work in, without standing up a GIS pipeline to get it. Two of those integrations are public.
PlanIT Geo is a Colorado-based urban forestry consulting and software company. Its TreePlotter platform is used by municipalities, consultancies, and agencies for tree inventory, canopy assessment, and green infrastructure management.
Partnering with EarthDefine helps us deliver on this promise by offering nationwide, high-resolution urban tree canopy data with best-in-class accuracy, served through our TreePlotter CANOPY software as a service (SaaS) platform.
In May 2021 the two companies announced a partnership that put EarthDefine tree canopy and land cover data inside TreePlotter CANOPY as a subscription, what PlanIT Geo called Canopy as a Service. Before that, a canopy study was a project: scoped, quoted, analyzed by GIS staff, and repeated every few years when the numbers went stale. Delivering the analysis as data a client can already see in TreePlotter turns that into a subscription, so tracking canopy change over time no longer means commissioning the study again.
Regrid builds the parcel layer a lot of the industry runs on: standardized property and land ownership records covering the United States, Canada, and much of Europe, delivered through a parcel API, bulk files, feature services, and its own mapping application. Its customers work in real estate, insurance, utilities, government, and location analytics.
EarthDefine uses advanced AI and computer vision to derive building footprints from aerial imagery & LIDAR. What this means is greater coverage nationwide, including rural areas and places where building footprints have historically been harder to obtain.
EarthDefine building footprints power Regrid's Matched Building Footprints, which ships parcels already joined to the buildings that sit on them. The join is the hard part, and the work customers would otherwise do themselves: one building can cross several parcels, one parcel can hold several buildings, and getting that wrong quietly corrupts every count downstream. Deriving footprints from aerial imagery and LiDAR rather than from municipal records also extends the match into rural areas, where building data has always been thinnest.
